This Politico.com piece points out that independents -- the key swing voters -- are beginning to question the president's economic recovery plan. The long and short of it: They think it's too expensive, and they're not seeing any results.
If the Republicans have any hope of becoming relevant again, they need to hammer at a single, simple message: we're spending way too much and it's not working. The 2010 elections will hinge on that simple fact: either the stimulus plan is going to work (and now there's talk of a second stimulus package) or it's not. The early returns -- at least according to Vice President Biden -- point to failure.
Is it worth adding another trillion dollars in debt (in the form of pork barrel spending projects) to try and jump start the economy, or should we look at cutting corporate taxes and freeing up working capital for companies? A strong case could be made that if we want to stimulate job creation, there's no better -- and faster -- way to do it then reducing corporate taxes. If talk turns to a second stimulus plan, expect to hear a lot more about cutting corporate taxes. At this point, it's the Democrats best hope for avoiding a disastrous 2010 election.
