Five Questions for PIX11 Anchor Kaity Tong
Friday, May 29, 2009 at 07:31AM Well, here's a first. I did a "five questions" interview with Kaity Tong, co-anchor of the PIX11 Evening News, and she has simultaneously posted it on her terrific blog.
Many viewers know Kaity as the serious news anchor that she is, but she clearly has a very, very funny side, as evidenced by just about any one of her blog posts, as well as the five questions below. 1. You recently started blogging on the PIX website. Why did you take it up, and do you find it difficult making time for it?
Well, Nick, if you had read my FIRST BLOG, you would know the reason I began blogging was because I WAS FORCED TO! Watching my good friend Jim, blogging away in his office, chuckling merrily to himself when he got an idea he thought was especially witty, just irked me. Why? Because he had no time to sit around and shoot the breeze any more. AND, one of my bosses was bugging me to start a blog of my own. My response was to HIJACK Jim’s blog one day when he was on vacation ( I don’t think he’s ever forgiven me for that!). I refer you to Jim blog site December 19th, 2008. Anyway, my hijack blog, which basically talked about how I did NOT understand this obsession with blogging, got so many comments, that it slowly started to grow on me. Is it hard to find time for it? Have you watched our newscasts lately? I am convinced I threw to Arthur Chi’en the other day and said he was, live, in Westchester county when he was actually in Nassau because my brain was tired. Why? Too much blogging!
2. Do you think viewers feel more connected to you and Jim by reading your blogs? Are you concerned about crossing a certain line, or do those boundaries no longer exist?

3. What is the biggest single change you've seen in the past year or two or three in the local news business?
Oh, I could go on and on with this one. But since you said SINGLE biggest change, I would have to say how Jim seems to be getting older while I remain the same.
4. What is your daily routine? What time do you typically get in, and how do you prep for the newscast?
The work day usually begins around 3 in the afternoon. Before I get to the office, though, I have perused a number of papers and news websites, and checked out the various news channels. Before this crazy blogging thing started (along with twitter and Facebook), I had a few moments to exchange pleasantries with my ‘office husband” (that would be Jimbo), but not any more!!!! After reading and answering my emails, voicemails, checking comments on my blogs, trying to think up another topic for said blog, tweeting and Facebooking (which, as you know, I maintain very poorly), who’s got time to prepare for the news?! All kidding aside, after getting makeup (which seems to take longer all the time. I can’t imagine why), doing live updates at around 4:15 and 5:25, taping the show “open” plus more teases at 6PM, getting down to business with the newscast, messaging producers and writers with questions about various stories, shoving a slice of pizza down my throat while doing said things, recording MORE promos and such at quarter to nine, well that’s pretty much all the time we have before going over the rundown one more time and ta-da! IT’S SHOWTIME!
5. If you weren't a news anchor, what would you be doing?
Cattle rustling.
