A sign of the times

I guess I shouldn't be surprised by this Newsweek story about Olympic swimmer Jason Lezak's struggles to find a corporate sponsor.
But you'd think that the guy who swam the fastest 50 meters in history -- who literally willed himself past that French dude to win the 4x100 and help Michael Phelps keep his quest for immortality alive -- would have a few corporate sponsors and speaking engagements to keep him funded through the 2012 Olympics.
But with corporate America shedding jobs at a record pace, the first thing to go are non-essential sponsorships like Olympic athletes. And it could very well impact the 2012 games. Many of the top swimmers are either delaying their return to training or quitting altogether. The state sponsored teams like China might not run into the same funding problem, and it could very well shift the balance of power for good.
