Most economists believe that about a third of the $800 billion will go directly into the economy (tax cuts); about a third will eventually find its way into the economy (infrastructure projects); and about a third is just senseless pork and earmarks.
But that's not really the point. The stimulus plan -- or something close to it -- is going to pass Congress and get signed into law sometime in late February or early March. Even with the growing sentiment against it -- and every day there seems to be a little more opposition -- it's still going to sail through Congress.
So why all the consternation among Democrats in Congress and the administration over the lack of Republican support? For the first time in years, the Republicans are banding together on principle -- the right principle, by the way -- in opposing this plan, and the Democrats' mantra seems to be "obstructionists."
Memo to the Democrats: It's a lousy and costly bill. To use some business parlance, it has an awful return on investment, and the Republicans simply don't want to go along with it. How, exactly, does that make them obstructionists? Do we all have to agree on everything, even if it makes little sense?
The Republicans are standing on principle, and in the process they may -- underscore may -- gain politically down the road. If this bill is a flop -- and there's a good chance it will be -- the Democrats will have some explaining to do. And the Republicans know it.
