Newt 2012?
Saturday, February 28, 2009 at 06:19PM Matt Bai has an outstanding cover story on Newt Gingrich in the New York Times Magazine. It's a must, must read. Bai is a lefty, but he handles the subject matter fairly.
I have all sorts of mixed emotions about Newt. On the one hand, the guy was the Republican Moses; he single-handedly led the party to the promised land after 40 years in the wilderness. He has a brilliance -- an intellectual intensity -- that is rare in politics, and extremely rare in Republican politics. He's a one man think tank, and while a good number of his ideas are either silly or unworkable, for a party bereft of ideas he's still the only game in town.
Newt led the party to power from way out in right field ... can he do it again? Well, he's no longer in power -- hasn't been for a decade -- but that doesn't seem to have diminished his sway over the party one bit. He's still the Republicans best strategist, and will continue to shape their response to the president's agenda.
Is that a good thing? Not sure. He's brilliant, and a great tactician, and the Republicans will benefit from his experience. But it also speaks to the fact that they're a rudderless, leaderless, moribund party with a razor thin bench and no inspirational leader. One could argue that Newt is simply filling a void.
In Bai's piece, Newt brings up 2012, proferring that he'll have to decide by early 2011 whether to take a go at the White House. It's way too early to speculate, but my guess is he'll flirt with the notion -- like he did this past election -- but ultimately decide against it. Newt's an idea man, not a retail politician. He's polarizing, arrogant, and wildly unlikeable to large chunks of the populace, and no amount of makeover-ing will change that.
He should stick to strategy and ideas, and help recruit new talent to the party. One thing is for certain: he'll be entertaining to watch over the next few years.

He's not going to fake that he is a born again anything to sway the religious right....who may not be republican in their jeans ( or genes ) anyway. And I remember when conservatives had solutions to offer, not fear and hate.
