Eliot talks ethics at Harvard

I appeared on WPIX 11 news to talk about Eliot's Spitzer's latest stop on his "look at me try to rehabilitate my image tour" at Harvard University, where he gave a talk on ethics (insert joke here).
There's no doubt that Eliot is making a concerted effort to rehab his effort. First it was the Today Show, then Morning Joe, then a few op-eds and a regular column on Slate.com. But the question remains: to what end?
Is he just trying to save face and become a respectable citizen (if he ever was one), or does he have bigger plans (namely, running for office again)?
Who knows. Is it inconceivable that he could make a stab at running for Attorney General or perhaps Mayor of NYC? Well, stranger things have happened, and while it seems far fetched, it's not totally out of the question. I give it a low probability, but it's not an impossibility.
But Eliot is missing an important step on his world rehab tour. He's done all the requisite things except show contrition and actually apologize -- really apologize -- for his appalling behavior. It's as if he missed a step in the process, and sort of went from sin to reconciliation without ever showing contrition. The American public has an enormous capacity to forgive and forget and move on; we prove it time and again with scandals. When there's real remorse and contrition, were all too happy to forgive and move on.
But I don't recall Eliot throwing himself at the mercy of the people. He sort of glossed over that part with some tight lipped, half-hearted explanation and moved on. He needs to take a step back and really give a full, public accounting for what he did, why he did it, and show actual remorse. Maybe he's not capable of it, but unless he does that, he'll remain a circus sideshow.
