It might not seem that important (after all, it still passed by some 50+ votes), but it could have big implications for the 2010 elections. If the economy sputters through next summer and fall -- a very real possibility -- Obama and the Democrats are going to take the blame.
Since this is their stimulus package, it's also now their economy. Rightly or wrongly, come November of 2010, they'll either be rewarded or blamed at the ballot box.
The Republicans know this, and that's why they voted along party lines. They're betting that the economy will remain soft through next summer, and they don't want their fingerprints anywhere near it.
It's a gamble by the Republicans, but a calculated one.
