Obama takes off the gloves (or at least one)

Since her electriying speech at the Republican convention, Barack Obama and Joe Biden have struggled with how to deal with Sarah Palin.

Not wanting to come off as a bully, especially on the heals of his bruising primary with Hillary, Obama has mostly given Palin a free pass while on the campaign trail, even though she continues throwing sharp barbs at both Democrats.

Today he took of the gloves -- or atleast one glove -- while on the hustings in Colorado.  “I know the governor of Alaska has been, you know, saying she is change, and that is great. She is a skillful politician. But when you [have] been taking all these earmarks when it is convenient and then suddenly you are the champion anti-earmark person.  That is not change, come on.  I mean, words mean something. You can’t just make stuff up. You can’t just make stuff up. We have a choice to make and the choice is clear.”

It's a smart -- and safe -- tact for Obama; it's confined to a relatively narrow issue -- earmark spending -- and attempts to portray her as just an ordinary politician, and not the crusading reformer she claims to be.  It'll be interesting to see if (and how) they step-up the criticism of Palin in the days to come.  Will Obama bring up her thin resume? Will they challenge her on energy policy and drilling in ANWR? Her pro-life position?

There's little doubt that Palin will ratchet up her digs against team Obama -- she's proven that she's more than capable of playing the pit bull.  It'll be fascinating to see how they respond.
