Community Organizer

Seems like "community organizer" has become the word du jour this election cycle.  The Republicans are having a good time poking fun at Obama's time spent as a community organizer in Chicago, and Governor Palin delivered the best sound byte of the election with: "being a small town mayor is sort of like being a community organizer -- except you have actual responsibilities"

But most (myself included) have zero clue as to what community organizing means.  John Judis, a liberal writer for the New Republic (a liberal magazine) has a terrific piece on Obama's community organizing years.  His findings are much different that what you'd expect.

The fact the Obama took a Harvard education and decided to pursue a life as a community organizer says more to me about the person than what he was or wasnt able to accomplish during that time. The right wing makes it sound like this was all he was before running for president. This was his first job after college for gosh sakes. He talks about it so much while on the stump because it shows he is a person of the people, not someone that was born in familty money and excess. A real person v a career politician that at the age of 73 is now so into change. What a joke. I don't need a definition of what a community organizer is, just knowing he spent nearly three years doing something as noble as this rather than ride his Harvard education to certain financial success is what is more important to me.

And what was McCain doing during Obama's early life? For one, he leaves his crippled wife not long after a terrible car accident and dates, then marries an heir to a huge family fortune. I am sure that connects so well with people, my friends.
