In search of a turniquette
Tuesday, September 2, 2008 at 10:35PM The Republicans needed to put a turniquette on their convention, and Fred Thompson came through.
If Thompson has spoken so eloquentially and powerfully on his own behalf, the Republicans might be nominating him this week. Hit hit all the right notes: poked holes at Obama's thin resume; defended Sarah Palin; and spoke of McCain the reformer.
John McCain's story is not new -- he's one of the best known public figures in America -- and yet hearing Thompson retell McCain's experience as a POW was moving and powerful. Thompson had the line of the night when he said "being a POW doesn't qualify anyone to be President, but it speaks a lot about character."
Watching the convention coverage, we're also beginning to see the GOP's response to the Palin-experience issue: She has more executive experience than Barack Obama. Chuck Todd of NBC noted that Obama's first response to a Palin-experience question -- that his executive experience came in the form of running the campaign -- hit a sour note, and is something the Obama campaign is internally struggling with. The feeling among many pundits is that the Obama campaign doesn't want to tackle the Palin-experience head on because it makes for an uncomfortable conversation, and they'd rather keep this about change v Bush-McCain.
But tonight was just a temporary turniquette. The real test comes tomorrow night, in what may be the most anticipated acceptance speech in modern memory. Sarah Palin will have the undivided attention of the nation -- something that rarely occurs anymore -- and she can either deliver a homerun or fizzle before our eyes. It will be political theater on steriods.

Thompson's message was well done, though the delivery reminded me of why he bombed in all the earlier debates. Can someone get him lozenge?
Agree Thompson was solid, though tonight was more band-aid than turniquette - the cheap, generic brand of band-aid that falls off after a few hours.
No doubt Obama camp is cranking on "experience" messaging (or strategy for diverting from it). Think the longevity of experience debate depends on how impressive/unimpressive Palin is on convention stage.
