Star of SNL: Sarah Palin

As was widely suspected, Tina Fey made a cameo appearance on SNL last night to play Sarah Palin in the opening skit.

It was pretty hillarious -- by far the funniest moment of an otherwise limp season premiere (note to Michael Phelps: stick to swimming, big guy).

During Weekend Update they went after Palin again with a lame bit that amounted to little more than piling on. I suspect we'll see a lot more of that over the next two months.

Footnote: To fully understand why McCain's poll numbers have moved so dramatically the past two weeks, just check out Sarah Palin's entrance yesterday to her rally in Carson, Nevada.  What's particularly notable is that it's mostly women, and the near hysteria in which they greet her.  McCain never inspired this type of enthusiasm -- not by a long shot.

I think the movement in the polls simply reflects how Palin has closed the "enthusiasm gap" with Obama -- an advantage he's enjoyed for months on end.  I don't think she's necessarily winning a ton of converts -- just a few percentage points here and there -- but she's whipping the base into a frenzy, and as Karl Rove proved in 2004, that's sometimes good enough to win elections.
