Palin passes another test

For the Obama camp, Sarah Palin's interview with Charlie Gibson had to be deflating.

They needed her to stumble -- badly -- and she didn't. In fact, quite the opposite:  she looked resolute, confident, and in command of the subject matter.   It mostly focused on foreign policy -- her supposed weakness -- with a little bit of religion thrown in for good measure.  Bonus points for quoting Lincoln.

Was she brilliant? no.  But she didn't have to be brilliant.  She simply needed to avoid a Dan Quayle moment.  Her strength is on the stump, talking directly to voters, and energizing the base.  Irrespective of what McCain campaign manager Rick Davis thinks, she needs to go through this one-on-one vetting process -- I think the public would be outraged if she didn't -- but it will never be her strength. But it's not Obama's strength, either.  He tends to stammer and stumble when he's off script, like he did during the debates against Hillary.  In that sense, he and Palin are a bit alike.

Team McCain knows that, and that's why they're carefully selecting the outlets and the formats for Palin.  I'm not sure we'll see her on Meet the Press or This Week with George Stephanopoulos, but we'll probably see her do a morning show or two, and perhaps some local market interviews.

If Obama wants to derail the Palin express, their only real opportunity may come during the Vice Presidential debate.  And the stakes get even higher.

Footnote:  The New York Times did a piece on the ABC interview, and gave it a fairly reasonable review (for the NYTs).

Let me see:

1. she stated her foreign policy experience is that her state is near russia and energy (whatever that means)

2. She stumbled on the question about her previously stated role God plays in Iraq. In fact, the the fact that she even remotely feels God has some sort of role is insane. Ralph Reed anjd his religious freak followers are proud of that though

3. She had no clue about what Bush's Doctrine is as it relates to the Iraq war and potential future wars, she was puzzled when he even asked her about it even though it is a phrase that is so commonly used among political types, media, etc

4. She will go to war with a true Superpower (Russia) over their quarrles and attacks on Georgia. I suppose we will defend the republic of Togo through attacking another island nation if it came to that.

And this was in an interview hand picked by her own people. I do think she is kind of pretty though. I would read the bible with her on a date any time.

what interview was this guy watching?

September 11, 2008 | Unregistered Commenterakm

Really... Mitch, what interview were you watching?

September 11, 2008 | Registered CommenterTom Ragone

She held her own - more so than I expected.

Note to McCain camp: um, someone please brief Sarah on Bush's doctrine - just in case.

i wasnt impressed. my mother could have done this if she had the same media training that she did. she was robotic and wrote. i did try to find her phone number to sede if she wanted to go to a movie with me

Why aren't they asking OBAMA these questions?

I seriously despise the mainstream media.

September 12, 2008 | Unregistered Commenterln

This will sum it up. I suggest a reporter ask McCain in an interview - Sen McCain, can you give me the names of Gov. Palin's 5 children. No, ok, how about 3 of her five children.

Hey Mitch, yes, if Russia invades a country (Georgia) that is in a treaty with us (AKA NATO), you better believe that's war. That's what treaties are for. You attack one of us... you attack us all.

I'm sure Obama would rather sit down with Putin and say, "Vladmir, what's the matter? Let's talk about this. Can I get you some water first? Tell me what's troubling you." But Governor Palin and Senator McCain know an illegal occupation and war when they see one...

Let me seen, In, you don't think Obama faced a full on assault during the ABC presidential debate that Gibson and Stephanopoulus moderated? You don't think he has been asked hard question during the last 18 months? give me a break. He just sat down with O'Reilly and did quite well considering the interviewer. You cannot compare Palin's tough questions from one Gibson interview to anything Obama has faced these last 18 months -- from multiple media outlets. It isn't even close.

Instead, she will now hide, won't do Sun morning shows (Obama has done too many to count) and will be attached to McCain's hip for the next 7 weeks.

September 12, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterMitch

Alan, I do not trust McCain's judgment on deciding when to go to war - and with who. My only experience with that is his decision to invade Iraq - that turned out pretty well.

September 12, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterMitch

C'mon, folks, it's not the President's decision when to go war, it's God's, apparently.

September 12, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterClark

Touche Clark! According to Pailin, Iraq war it is part of God's plan...what a joke. I dont want some religious nutball making decisions for my country. Bush was enough, but she is even scarier than Bush.

New from Activision!!! Call of Duty 17.16!!! The Lord is Back and He's Pissed!!!

September 12, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterClark

Completely agree with you Mitch. Thanks for standing up to say the obvious.

September 12, 2008 | Unregistered Commentersupporter

Mitch and Clark, maybe you should have been paying attention to Palin's interview she was paraphrasing Lincoln about God and war.

September 12, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterAlan

she is a religious nut alan.

September 12, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterMitch

Well then she did a very poor job of it.. Lincoln's God reference and the actual taped conversation to her church are completely different. And would have included "as Lincoln once said..". Do you think anyone in the congregation thought WOW that was a quote from Lincoln! It sounded more like a quote from Elwood Blues.

And she is trying so hard to convince us that she is ready to be VP and President that she comes across as rash and not well thought out. We need someone to balance hot head McCain out..not whip him into a frenzy and act before he thinks.. as soon as he asked me by cell phone I said YES..you can't blink Charlie.. you can't think about how it will effect your family or country or the world if you run.. you just have to be wired that way.. (wired on a lot of coffee and misguided ideas)... just say YES..don't think about it or anything?

And I am one of those people they say must have never been to Wal-Mart because they don't like her. I was a former republican now a Catholic democrat that due to a budget takes the kids with me to Wal-Mart several times a week and she scares the sweet bejesus out of me.

You know who I rub elbows with at Wal-Mart? A hell of a lot of poor democrats looking for some serious change..not just 10% fruit juice.. the rich republicans you claim love Wal-Mart are the ones preventing Wal-Mart from moving in to their areas because the of crowd they think it will attract.

Hypocrites.

September 12, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterWal-Mart Wendy

right on Wendy. This selection is utter nonsense. Brilliant (to Nick's point) that it derailed the real issues, topics, etc. But I am counting on Americans to be smarter than to fall for this trick, I really am.

Actually, I am insulted that the political powers that be would make such a selection as Palin, given the current state of our country (wars, economy, etc.). I, for one, am not that stupid to buy into this crap. With all do respect to Alaskans, working moms, etc., I dont want a soccer mom being a heart-beat away from running our country.. I equate being Governor of Alaska to be of much less significance than being Governor of frankly any other state in the country. She says she is so close to Russia that she can see it from her office window. Well, lady, I would prefer you to be closer to Russia than closer to anything having to do with making ANY decisions about my country.

September 12, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterMitch

Mrs. Governor, you're no Abraham Lincoln...

September 12, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterClark

Mrs. Governor, God just called and he would like you to give back the state funds you took/then didn't take after you were told you couldnt take them by the Federal government -- for the bridge to nowhere project. God has a plan for you to stop lying to Americans about earmarks you took as well. God doesn't like liars, Mrs. Governor. God does have a plan, Mrs. Governor, and it includes you going back to where you came from. Don't be upset, God is on your side.

September 12, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterMitch

Truth is, Palin is absorbing all the energy and oxygen from the Democrats. And every day Obama and Biden get suckered into going after her is another day where McCain gets a free pass.

The polls bear this out: Gallup daily tracking still has it at +3 McCain, and now AP and Rasmussen both show +3, too (for the first time). This tells me that McCain's lead is hardening. At some point, Obama needs to knock McCain off his rhythm -- something he's failed to do for over two months. Many Democrats are privately beginning to wonder if they nominated the wrong person.

September 12, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterNick

Go ahead guys, keep hating on Palin. The more you attack her, the better she comes out looking. Every time the Democrats hit on her family, her religious views, the Republicans lead just increases.

September 12, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterAlan

"thank god" - sarah palin

September 12, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterMitch

I loved her in "Annie, Get Your Gun."

September 12, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterClark

Fact - Alaska is ths single heaviest pork-laden state's in the country. More earmark's per capita than ANY state

Fact - Sarah Palin is Governor

Fact - Reform is the farthest thing from what she stands for or "accomplished."
