Truly a Clintonian performance
Friday, August 8, 2008 at 10:06PM Three posts on le affaire Edwards is about two too many, but I feel compelled to make one final point.
Nevermind the curious behavior of the mainstream media, which ignored the National Enquirer's persistent reporting on on it, only to run hog wild with the story the second Edwards admitted to the affair.
And nevermind the fact that Edwards virulently deployed the "trash-the-messenger-in-the-pathetic-hope-to-discredit-the-story" defense while knowing full well that they were spot-on right.
The part I don't understand: Did John Edwards really think that if he had secured the Democratic nomination, this story wouldn't have eventually come out? Talk about putting your foibles first. It takes a lot of guts, and a whole lot more stupidity, to seek your party's nomination knowing that the sword of damocles hangs above your head. He would have basically handed the presidency to the Republicans, and gone down as the most loathed Democratic since ... well, ever.

Nick, your final point made here is exactly why i was so surprised MSM wasn't on this story in the first place. Scandal, yes, but the implication of this had he secured the nomination and essentially bring down the party in an important election year...that's the news. He is still denying he is the father. He is the father, and when that comes out, his lies after admitting he initially lied about the affair will ruin him forever.
I am no fan of Edwards, or anyone of his ilk either, however I also had to wonder - did he not think this would get out?
