Got your butt kicked? Just say you let them win*
Saturday, July 5, 2008 at 02:29PM Here's an interesting story. Evidentially, 1983 Wimbeldon finalist Andrea Jaeger, a little-known journeywoman tennis player whose career ended in injury two years later, "let" Martina Navritilova win the championship.
Jaeger told the AP: "During the match I missed balls on purpose. I hit right to Martina and when I was getting whipped in the first set 6-0, I tried to look upset about it."
Not that I was at the All England Club for that match, or even remember in the slightest, but something tells me Ms. Jaeger stood little chance of defeating the greatest female tennis player of all time. I sense a little revisionist history going on here.
But it brings up a larger point: I hope this doesn't lead to a rash of athletes explaining away their crushing defeats. Though it could account for Greg Norman's '96 Masters collapse, the Yankees historic choke to the Red Sox in 2004, and Ivan Drago's defeat to Rocky in Rocky IV. I think the British used that excuse in 1783 as well.
* This explains why I lost to a 90 year old guy in the club championship a few years back

Andrea Jaeger graduated from Stevenson High School (my Alma Mater) --though a handful of years before I went there. She is a legend in my home town, but this doesn't help does it!
