Ragone to Wie: time to win on the LPGA tour*
Sunday, July 27, 2008 at 10:05AM As many of you can tell by my posts, I'm a golf geek. Bigtime. So indulge me for the occassional golf rant.
This one annoys me. Turns out former teen phenom (and now just orindary teen) Michelle Wie is going to play in the PGA Tour's Reno-Tahoe Open next week, one of the circuits weakest field events. She gladly accepted a sponsors exemption, and it will be her 8th PGA Tour event.
I'm a huge Michelle Wie fan, and in general thought her competing against the men was a good thing for the sport. But that was when she was at the top of her game, and legitimately had a shot at making the cut, which she nearly did at the Sony Open and John Deere three years ago.
Over the past two years, however, she's been mired in a David Duval-esque funk, brought on by a combination of injuries and poor advice. She has struggled to make cuts on the LPGA Tour, and has flat out embarassed herself in men's events. She doesn't even have status on the LPGA Tour, and until last week, she hadn't seriously contended in an LPGA event in two years (she was disqualified after three rounds for failing to sign her card, something I've never heard of before).
Michelle Wie hasn't made many friends on either tour during her visit to the abyss the past two years. She's pulled out of events after receiving sponsors exemption, isolated herself from other players, and otherwise acted like a moody and self-centered teenager.
Wie needs to put the PGA Tour stuff on hold and focus on getting her career back on track. She could start by earning her LPGA card the old fashioned way -- by qualifying at Q-school -- and engratiating herself with fellow competitors by dropping the stand-offish behavior. If Michelle Wie wants to make a mark on the sport, she needs to start by playing great golf, and she really needs to win on the LPGA Tour. And with that, hopefully she'll win the respect of her playing partners on both circuits -- something she doesn't have right now.

I've been saying this about Wie for quite a while now. I'm happy that she has the talent to play a few PGA events, but how about winning something on the LPGA tour first.
