The art of the headfake

Hand it to the McCain folks -- they're digging deep into the campaign 101 playbook to try and steal some of the spotlight back from Barack Obama this week as he tour's Iraq with the three networks in tow.

Case in point:  someone in the McCain camp leaked to columnist Bob Novak that McCain would reveal his Vice Presidential nominee this week.

The likelihood of that happening, however, are about the same as A-Rod and his wife getting back together.   Put another way, there's zero chance McCain is going to announce his Veep pick anytime soon -- odds are he'll wait until right after the Democratic convention so as to try and minimize Obama's post-Denver bump.

But their little Novak trial balloon accomplished the task at hand:  it stole a bit of the news-cycle today, and gave the chattering class something to talk about other than Obama in Iraq.   Not sure what else McCain has up his sleeve, but we'll probably see another head-fake in the next day or so.

You didn't hear? McCain named Cynthia Rodriguez as Veep running mate. Now that would be a helluva hot ticket.

Must hand it to McCain camp, though - decent semi-news distraction.
