Two colleagues at Ketchum, Chris Kooluris and Jon Bellinger, along with our amazing clients Jason Genthner and Greg Artkop, pulled off one of the coolest PR coups ever for one of our clients, Dr Pepper/Snapple Group. Not sure if you've seen this story, but a bride-to-be in Virginia -- in a very creative effort to help fund her wedding -- decided to auction off on ebay the right to be one of her bridesmaids.
The national press, including the Associated Press, picked up on the story, and soon the bidding approached $5,000 dollars. Dr. Pepper/Snapple Group, being one of the coolest companies on the planet, decided to enter the bidding with the hopes of making her special day even more special, and low-and-behold won it.
What happened next was truly remarkable. The bride, Kelly Gray, called my office (Chris Kooluris conveniently put all of this on my credit card) to verify that this was for real. I told her it was, and that Dr Pepper/Snapple was thrilled to help her out. She started bawling, and blurted out "this is being recorded by Good Morning America." Sort of stunned and not knowing what to do, Chris and I looked at eachother and decided to up the number to an even $10,000, at which point she started crying hysterically.
All of this was recorded by GMA, and aired at 7:15 am EST. As for who will actually serve as the bridesmaid, that part hasn't been figured out yet. Chris says he'd like to do it, but we'll see ...
