If you recall, Imus was fired from WFAN after making some vulgar racial remarks about the Rutgers Women's basketball team (my alma mater). No need recapping the brouhaha that ensued, but suffice to say it took a semi-makeover to get him back on the air, including adding an African-American co-host and scaling back some of sidekick Bernard McGuirk's racially stereotyped imitations.
Though the ratings have been pretty meager, Imus had semi-rehabilitated his career, and many of the same guests that he had on at WFAN are back in the rotation at WABC (including the late Tim Russert).
Imus may have put that all in jeopardy, however, with this odd exchange between himself and his sports sidekick, Warner Wolf, who was reporting on the news that troubled NFL star Adam "Pacman" Jones was thinking about dropping the nickname Pacman.

You would think that Imus would know enough to steer clear of discussing race in such a flippant manner, but evidentially not. It's one thing to have a reasoned discussion about race -- it's been happening all over the country for the past six months -- but it's quite another to just say stupid, irritating things for the sake of being stupid and irritating. There's a mean spiritedness and casualness to this most recent exchange that is somewhat reminiscent of his Rutgers comments; it will be very interesting to see how this plays out over the next few days.
