Obama learning hardball
Thursday, June 19, 2008 at 08:40PM If there was any doubt that the Obama campaign had finally mastered the art of hardball politics, it should be put to rest on the simple news that they've named Patty Solis Doyle -- Hillary's former campaign manager and longtime scheduler and confidant -- as chief of staff to their eventual Vice Presidential nominee.
The New York Observer summed up this selection best with the headline: "Clinton Bundler on Obama's Doyle Pick: The Biggest F*ck You Ever."
Hillary and Solis Doyle have not been on speaking terms since she was fired as Hillary's campaign manager back in February, and the Obama camp knows that. Obama's people also know that by naming Solis Doyle as the Veep handler, it puts Hillary on notice that it won't be her. Translation: don't bother lobbying us for the spot.
Truth is, the Observer headline got it wrong: It's a Herculean f*ck you to Hillary's camp, and should put to rest any talk about a dream ticket. I wouldn't be surprised if it dampens Hillary's enthusiasm to campaign on behalf of Obama, or urge her supporters to fall in line. I wonder if McCain will pick Romney's former campaign manager as his Veep handler ...
