Obama to declare victory (um, sorta)*

In one of the more unusual headlines in recent memory, evidentially Barack Obama is going to "declare victory" after the Oregon and Kentucky primaries on May 20th -- at least that's what Politico.com is reporting.

obama.bmpWhy May 20th?  Because he will likely have surpassed 1,627 pledged delegates, meaning he will have an unsurpassable majority of the 2025 pledged delegates at stake (not including Michigan and Florida).  In other words, Hillary will have no chance of capturing more pledged delegates.

The Clinton Camp, of course, disputes the 2025 number, and prefers instead to go with 2209, which factors in the uncontested Florida and Michigan contests.

What does this all mean?  Obama is going to exert an unbelievable amount of pressure on the uncommitted superdelegates to end this race.   And he'll need to, because Clinton's don't back down, and they certainly don't quit.  Hillary has basically dared the superdelegates to declare for Obama by saying she won't stop running until someone has reached the magic number.  At this point, only the superdelegates can put him over the top.

*I'm going to declare the Mets the greatest team in the history of the universe, except for the times when they suck. And whatnot.
