Super Saturday!
Saturday, May 31, 2008 at 07:23PM As if more evidence was needed that the Democrats are in disarray, look no further than today's raucous Rules Committee meeting in Washington.
While the committee was able to compromise on the delegations in dispute -- Florida and Michigan -- by essentially splitting the difference (Clinton will net about 20 delegates total, which still leaves her 200+ behind Obama), it wasn't without controversy.
The Hillary Camp -- led by longtime Clinton arm-twister Harold Ickes -- officially "reserved the right" to take the fight to the Credentials Committee in Denver. Translation: Hillary has no intention of going gentle into that good night.
If Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid think they're going to lasso this process to conclusion next week, they're sorely mistaken. I've said it all along, and I'll say it again: Clinton's don't quit, and they certainly don't lose graciously.
My prediction: They'll be spending all summer trying to figure out how to wrestle the nomination away from Obama in Denver. The result will be a weakened Obama, which may just be their master plan.
A couple of footnotes:
- Chuck Todd of NBC is the best thing on Television. Ok, maybe Lost is better, but not by much. He definitely had the best line of the day when he said it was "Obama's party now." He was referring to the fact that Obama had defeated Hillary in the "outside game" -- the primaries and caucuses -- and now the "inside game," by getting a split in the disputed delegations. The kicker for Todd: The fact that Don Fowler -- a former DNC Chairman and ardent Hillary supporter -- went along with the Pro-Obama compromise, citing party unity as his reasoning. It may be an indication that the superdelegates are ready to coalesce around Obama.
- If the protesters outside and non-stop interruptions inside are any indication, the Denver convention is going to look a lot more like the circus-conventions of '68, '72, '80 and '84 than the coronations of 2000 or 2004. For a party already deeply divided, a contested convention would be a devastating blow to their chances of defeating McCain.
- While the Democrats were battling eachother in Washington, Barack Obama quietly put out notice that he had resigned from the Trinity United Church. A smart -- and long overdue -- move, and one that will come under much more scrutiny next week from the chattering class.

Never in my wildest imagination did I think spending a Saturday morning, afternoon and early evening glued to MSNBC for 10 hours would be considered a fun thing to do.
It was well worth it. I've rarely seen something so interesting (and enlightening) on TV...to literally watch raw politics in action.
Whether you support Obama or Clinton, this was a treat. Though my wife thinks I am crazy.
So true. And so unfortunate.
While there is something to be said for a fighter, especially in the grueling political realm-- when the time to wrap things up has presented itself as clearly as possible in a close race and the cue isn't taken... the light shining on that 'fighter' slowly yet surely morphs into an increasingly unfavorable one. Senator Clinton, such a time has come.
If there were ever reason/circumstance for presidential candidates to go at it down to the wire vying for a party's nomination, this might be it-- and that it has been. Past tense. For Sen. Clinton to not see the greater divide she risks driving in her party-- the last thing needed and the antithesis of the Democratic platform-- and the animosity brewing not-so-beneath the surface of many current/former/potential supporters, it comes off looking like like she's turning an almost unforgivable blind eye to a large potential problem that could cause irreparable harm. Bowing out gracefully isn't defeat nor is it giving up...in/at this time, it is wise. The drive and determination perhaps once exemplified by her battling on is being stripped away, and what's revealed underneath is not so desirable.
Though bolstered by and garnering encouragement from her most avid backers, on the scheme of things she is doing little except pushing a steadily increasing number of people further and further away-- and how this can't be anything but (for lack of a better word) bad for her presidential candidacy, political career in general, and party... I do not know.
And Lost IS the best thing on television.
