Top-50 political pundits

The Telegraph, a UK paper, has a ranking of the top-50 most influential political pundits in the United States.

pundits-10-1-404_667250c.jpgIt's a fun little read, though I don't necessarily agree with much of it.  They have Karl Rove ranked first, not so much because he's a ubiquitous talking head -- there are many others who appear on TV more frequently -- but because he's still the smartest person in politics, period.

Household names like Tim Russert, Matt Drudge, John Stewart and Chris Matthews are among the top-10, along with lesser known personalities like Mark Halperin, author of Time Magazine's "The Page" (and an astute choice for the top-10).

NBC's Chuck Todd was a surprising -- though well deserved -- choice at 14th, while James Carville was merely 28th and Paul Begala 43rd.  I was disappointed to see Bill Kristol a lowly 32rd -- he's widely considered one of the most astute observers of policy and politics -- and shocked that George Stephanopoulos was nowhere to be found.  Other glaring omissions: "Morning" Joe Scarborough, Maureen Dowd, and George Will.
