Hillary's mistakes

With Hillary Clinton's demise all but complete, get ready to see a wave of post-mortems in the coming weeks analyzing what went wrong for the Clintons.

CARI.H.Clinton.gifKaren Tumulty of Time Magazine kicks it off with an excellent piece in the current issue titled "Five Mistakes Clinton Made."  Tumulty's take:  Hillary never understood the mood for change; didn't grasp the proportional delegate rules; ignored the caucus states; failed to use the web to fundraise; and didn't organize in the late voting states.

Tom Bevan of RealClearPolitics adds a sixth mistake to Tumulty's list:  The Clinton camp failed to stop Obama cold in Iowa with the Reverend Wright association.

Writes Bevan:

Clinton's first and biggest mistake, which eventually led to her undoing, can be summed up in a single question: how and why did her campaign miss Obama's association with Reverend Wright?

Put simply, had Reverend Wright been introduced to voters a few days before the Iowa caucuses, odds are Barack Obama would not be a hair's breadth away from clinching the Democratic nomination for President of the United States.

Bevan posits a few theories as to why the Clinton's failed to act, but at the end of the day he's right: had Wright become an issue in the weeks leading up to Iowa, Obama would have stood little chance to build any momentum.   My guess is that the Clinton's probably underestimated Obama's strength early on, and figured they'd put him away on Super Tuesday.  Add it to the long list of her mistakes.
