Obama's Wright problem, part II
Thursday, April 24, 2008 at 08:21PM Just when Barak Obama thought he had gotten past the Jeremiah Wright controversy, it's back. Or more accurately, the good reverend himself is back in the country -- and talking.
Wright gave his first interview since the controvery broke to PBS host Bill Moyers, and reading from excerpts he seems unapologetic and downright confused by the reaction.
"The persons who have heard the entire sermon understand the communication perfectly," he tells Moyers. "Those who are doing that [criticising him] are communicating exactly what they want to do, which is to paint me as some sort of fanatic."
Most people don't believe that he's being portrayed as a fanatic; they believe he is a fanatic. Why he has chosen now to publicly explain and defend himself is baffling. It couldn't come at a worse time for Barak Obama as he tries to convince superdelegates that he is is electable. And if the Moyer's interview wasn't enough, Wright plans on giving a speech at the National Press Club on Monday, which undoubtedly will dominate several more news cycles -- and depending on what else comes out of his mouth, could set off a new firestorm.
Bottom line: Obama must win Indiana on May 6th. Should he lose, Democratic party leaders and superdelegates will have serious doubts about his electability, and they're going to move to Clinton in droves. What say thee good reverend?
