"Irreparable breach"
Friday, April 25, 2008 at 07:06PM When the third-ranking Democrat in the House, who happens to be a leading African-American voice in Congress, says that President Clinton's behavior during the campaign has caused an "irreparable breach" between the Clinton's and African-Americans, it's not good.
In this case, for the Democrats, it's really not good. Bill Clinton's latest outburst -- that the race card has been played against him -- has infuriated African American leaders, and compelled Representative Jim Clyburn to make his "breach" assessment.
Bill Clinton simply can't keep quiet on the subject, and every time he tries to explain himself, he digs a deeper hole. This latest salvo may have been the straw that broke the Camel's back.
Says Clyburn: "When he was going through his impeachment problems, it was the black community that bellied up to the bar. I think black folks feel strongly that that this is a strange way for President Clinton to show his appreciation.” Reports the New York Times: Mr. Clyburn added that there appeared to be an almost “unanimous” view among African-Americans that Mr. and Mrs. Clinton were “committed to doing everything they possibly can to damage Obama to a point that he could never win."
The bottom line is that Hillary Clinton can't win the nomination without the superdelegates over turning the primary voters, and that very idea now seems preposterous given the level of antipathy between African-American leaders and Bill Clinton. The party would be torn asunder should Hillary prevail on a technicality (the superdelegates), and it will assuredly mean a McCain presidency. In an odd way, Bill Clinton's estrangement from the African-American community has sort of guaranteed Obama the nomination.
