Bob Barr: Nader of the right?
Monday, April 14, 2008 at 08:02PM George Will points out in his Newsweek column that former Republican Congressman Bob Barr, who is seaking the Libertarian nomination for President, could turn out to be the "Ralph Nader" of the right.
Will's thesis: Barr could siphon enough McCain votes in key swing states like Florida, Ohio, New Hampshire and New Mexico to potentially impact the outcome, much like Nader did in 2000.
Unlike Nader, however, Barr has almost no national following, and the Libertarian Party faces serious ballot access problems. On the other hand, Ron Paul has re-energized the Libertarian base with his quirky Republican campaign for President, and some of the Paul supporters could become Barr devotees. It's doubtful Barr could have the same impact as Nader, but it's certainly another thing to worry about if you're John McCain.
