McCain/Mitt 2008?

New York Magazine has a good piece about Mitt Romney's desire to be McCain's running mate.

mac-rom.jpgThis is interesting on several levels.  First, there was absolutely no love-loss between the candidates on the campaign trail.  In fact, there seemed to be a genuine dislike of Romney by the entire Republican field, with McCain arguably at the head of that class.

Beyond that, it's highly unusual for a potential Veep to so publicly lobby for the job.  In fact, the opposite is usually the norm: lay low, pretend like you have other things to do, and avoid interviews.  Romney has gone out of his way to state his case to the media and the candidate himself, and to some it's coming off as a bit desperate.

All that being said, McCain should give Romney serious consideration, if only for that fact that the guy is a financial whiz and would certainly be an asset should the economy continue to tank.  He could also help with fundraising, and strengthens the ticket in two key states, Michigan and New Hampshire.

What are the odds on a McCain-Romney ticket? Probably not as long as a McCain-Condi pairing, but certainly not as likely as the other three front runners: Mark Sanford, Rob Portman, and Charlie Crist.
