It's a slow news weekend, so I thought I'd do another book review.

On the face of it, John Judis' William F. Buckley: Patron Saint of the Conservatives, might seem like a narrow and slanted topic.

Judis, after all, is a well traveled liberal writer and certainly didn't approach the topic as a Buckley acolyte. But bias not withstanding, it's an excellent and entertaining read. The prose is fluid and lively as it chronicles the life and times of arguably the most influential conservative intellectual of the Twentieth century.

Of course, it doesn't hurt that Buckley is one of the most fascinating figures of his generation. You'd be hard pressed to find a fictional character, let alone an actual human being, who lived a more robust, diverse, fulfilling life than Buckley. Prolific writer? check. Avid yachtsman: check. World class harpsichordist? Check. Father of a movement? check. Cultural elitist? Double check. This guy was James Bond with a New England accent.

For political junkies, the book has the added benefit of tracing the history of the conservative movement from its origins through Reagan. For a thick book, it's a surprisingly quick and easy read -- testament to Judis' crisp writing style. It might not be exactly beach material, but it's the perfect book for the flight.
