Chris Matthews to run for PA senate

The website FiveThiryEight.com is reporting that Chris Matthews appears to be ready to make a bid for Arlen Specter's Pennsylvania Senate seat.

For years, the loud-mouthed MSNBC talker has been rumored to be interested in that seat, but it looks like he'll finally take the plunge.

Evidently, he's been recruiting Obama alumns to work on his campaign, which is sure to be a doozy.

My guess is that he'll make a formidable candidate.  Sure, he's a bombastic blow-hard with no experience whatsoever as a candidate, but he does have a brilliant political mind and high name recognition -- two important assets.  Plus, he'll have little difficulty (I think) in raising a boat-load of dough from Obama's donor network.

It's uncertain if Specter will seak a fifth term.  If he doesn't, Matthews will likely be the frontrunner, mostly because the Pennsylvania Republican party is in total dissaray.  I suspect that the real battle will be in the Democratic primary, which will surely be crowded.

If nothing else, a Matthews campaign will provide endless entertainment.
