Five Questions for Democratic Powerbroker Tonio Burgos

With the election coming to an end, I'm starting a new feature called "Five Questions," where I interview someone from the media or politics.

This week's interview is with Tonio Burgos -- Democratic lobbyist, power broker, fundraiser, and founder of Tonio Burgos and Associates, his eponymous consulting firm. Burgos has been a longtime consigliere to the top Democratic officeholders, including Mario Cuomo, for whom he served as a top aide for over a decade, Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton, and David Patterson, among others. Burgos was a top Hillary Clinton fundraiser during the primaries, and served as a superdelegate to the Democratic National Committee in Denver. My joke about Tony is that he has more connections than a Cisco router. I asked him five questions this weekend:

1. Was the mainstream media unfair to Hillary Clinton during the primaries? Yes, the mainstream meda was unfair to the junior Senator from New York during the primaries. I have never seen the media go so out of its way to bring down Senator Clinton.

2. On September 8th, four days after the Republican National Committee, John McCain had a four point lead in the polls. On the eve of the election, he trails by anywhere from 7-10 points. What happened? Two things happened: The Palin choice for Vice President and Senator McCain's poor choice of words that the fundementals of the economy were sound, which led to his erratic attempt to impact the federal bailout in Washington.

3. Does Sarah Palin have a future in national politics, or has she been marginalized like Dan Quayle? Governor Palin has a future in GOP politics, unlike former Vice President Quayle, who never really worked towards the base the way she has. How many women in the GOP have her charisma and ability to work a crowd?

4. If obama is elected, what will his number one priority be in the first 100 days? If you listen to Senator Obama, his number one priority will be the American economy and it's current condition. Then the rest will follow, like energy independence, education, health care and the war.

5. What will Hillary Clintons role be in the senate over the next four years? Senator Clinton will continue to have a great future in the Senate. Her first term demonstrated her great ability to work across the aisle. The Senator can become a great voice in that chamber like Daniel Webster through Teddy Kennedy. The role of leader comes in many ways, even without the title of leader, such as working with the President to legislate a real healthcare program for the nation.

Johnathan Alter of Newsweek said something this morning on "Morning Joe" that really made me sit up and think -- He essentially spoke about how far our country has come (from a race relations standpoint) in such a short period of time in USA history -- He said, "Just think about it, the first 14 presidents could have owned Barack Obama as a slave."

When put in that kind of perspective, it really gives pause to what an amazing feat this will be for Obama when he is elected president tomorrow. I will be celebrating in a big way. It makes me feel that much more proud of our great country.

I'm voting Democrat because I believe businesses in America should not be allowed to make profits. Businesses should just break even and give the rest to the government so politicians and bureaucrats can redistribute the money the way they think it should be redistributed.

I'm voting Democrat because I believe guns, and not the people misusing them, are the cause of crimes and killings.

I'm voting Democrat because when someone with a weapon threatens my family or me, I know the government can respond faster through a call to 911 than I can with a gun in my hand.

I'm voting Democrat because oil companies' 10% profits on a gallon of gas are obscene, but government taxes of 18% on the same gallon of gas are just fine.

I'm voting Democrat because I believe three or four elitist liberals should rewrite the Constitution every few months to suit some fringe element that could never get their agenda past voters.

I'm voting Democrat because illegal aliens are not criminals, are not sucking up resources through government aid, hospital services, education, or social services, but are just people trying to make a better life by coming to America illegally. We can't blame them for that, can we?

I'm voting Democrat because now I can marry whatever I want, so I've decided to marry my horse.
