Obama's aunt an illegal alien

Well, it looks like we know what the October Surprise is ...

The AP is reporting that Barack Obama's aunt -- the one that is living in public housing in Boston -- is, in fact, an illegal alien.

Seems like she came over from Kenya four years ago seeking asylum, and it was denied.  She was asked to leave the country at that point, but somehow managed to get public housing.  Her deportation case is now working its way through INS.

Clearly, someone from INS had to leak her situation.  The Obama camp claims it had no knowledge of her illegal status, and promptly returned her $260 donation (it's illegal to accept campaign funds from foreigners).

For his part, McCain made no mention of it while on the stump today, and I doubt either he or Palin will speak to her situation.

Will this change the trajectory of the election over the final 72 hours? I don't think so, but it certainly can't help Obama, either.  My sense is that McCain already had some minor momentum with the redistribution of wealth stuff, and this might contribute to the last minute tightening.  It certainly will rob Obama of at least one news cycle, and depending on what else is unearthed about her, maybe two.  Maybe things are about to get interesting.

No chance Nick. This story will gtet scant coverage, at best. The whole immigration/illegal alien issue isn't even a talking point for either campaign right now. Nobody cares about it...and really, McCain's own base abandoned him when he went against his parrt on immigration reform.

Also, with the massive hispanic vote in play this election, do you think McLoser would risk ruffling feathers on any type of immigration stuff right now...if he and/or Pfailin or 529's come after BO, it would backfired on them.

Poor homeless aunt getting kicked out of the country -- sure, the electorate would really jump on that one.

I think this story raises a different issue -- why on earth would this guy let his aunt live in poverty? It makes no sense ... I think that's the more curious part about this whole thing, and it's already owning the news cycle. I think a lot of people are scratching their heads as to why he'd knowingly let an aunt live in abject poverty. It just doesn't add up.

That's a good point.

and if she's on welfare, why is she making political donations.
and if he knows she's on welfare, why is he taking her money?
is she one of those rich people that needs to have her money redistributed?

This whole thing seems a bit fishy. I mean, who lets their aunt be on public assistance ... especially if they're a public figure.

well obama wants us all on public assistance so maybe it's not all that shocking.

Alan, if Obama's tax plan in similar to Clinton's plan, which it is, is that a bad thing? Didn't our economy flourish then?

Also, if Obama is so off his rocker in terms of economic policy, taxes, etc, why would Mr. all-time capitalist Warren Buffett support him and be one of his economic advisors? And Paul Volcker? Robert Rubin? Are all these people crazy?

It seems to me, and I am no economic expert of course, that Obama has a pretty formidable team surrounding him...do you really think your personal wealth and realted issues will change that much and/or be stifled with Obama v McCain? At the end of the day, we all get hosed in taxes, interest rates, etc no matter who is running WH.

Obama people, explain to the rest of us what this well-funded, super powerful "civilian national security force" is all about.

Is that like some sort of fidel castro committee in defense of the revolution? I'm going to turn Mitch in for criticizing the president.
