Money Game

We know that the financial chaos and wall street bailout has hurt John McCain -- his poll numbers began to slide almost the moment Lehman Brothers went under three weeks ago.

But the other factor at work here is money.   According to the Associated Press, Barack Obama spent over $17 million last week in television advertising in key battleground states to John McCain's $11 million.

And in particular, he outspent McCain by three to one in Florida and Ohio -- perhaps the two most critical swing states.  The huge money advantage has forced McCain to give up on Michigan and move his resources elsewhere -- a bad sign for a campaign in desperate need of a few blue state pickups.

If Obama continues to outspend McCain by a two to one margin down the stretch, it will make it virtually impossible for McCain to close an eight point gap short of a total Obama meltdown.

Hey Nick, I have a question on this:

I recall that Obama massively outspent Hillary in tons of states and still lost in that state's primary.

Does outspending McCain by vast sums in general election make a bigger impact on the electorate compared to outspending in primary season?

I read about this and my first reaction was that Obama had huge $ advantages over Hillary and in some instances she still carried the state.

Interestingly enough, Obama may not need Ohio or Florida. I know that sounds preposterous, but I figured out yesterday that--right now, if the polls remain pretty close to where they are, and if latent racism doesn't play a major role in screwing up what the the polls are reporting--right now Obama has 264 electoral votes and McCain has 179, with 100 votes remaining from seven tossup states. Ohio and Florida are two of the tossups, and I have already counted New Mexico and Iowa (two of my former tossups) as going to Obama. The five other tossup states on my list are Colorado, Missouri, North Carolina, Nevada, and Virginia.

Only Nevada of those five does not have enough votes to put Obama at 270 or over. If Obama wins just one of CO, FL, MO, NC, OH, or VA, he'll be elected, according to my calculations--and again, if things don't shift in a major fashion between today and November 4, and if silent racism isn't operating. So, for example, if he wins North Carolina, he would become president without either FL or OH.

IF my listing 22 states and DC as voting for him is correct. And IF the polls stay close to where they are now. And IF they're accurate.

Of course, if we had ham, we could have ham and eggs.

If we had eggs.

Money in politics is a lot like money in baseball: it can't buy you a championship per se, but it sure can make up for a lot of mistakes (see Yankees, New York; Cubs, Chicago) ...

Triton....

Why does it have to be "Latent Racism" that makes people change their minds. Why can't they just not like him? You see what's happening...you and the media are already begin to plant this seed where the black man has someone or something to blame for his failures in life. Blame Whitey. Blame the system. Blame Slavery (300 years ago so what)...wah wah wah.

Your comments you remind me of this prick I used to know in school Ariel Shlein. Everytime someone would say anything to him...he would cry the Jewish card....and try to rally all his Jewish friends against us like we were Anti-Semites

Finally one day....I said....Ariel...I dont hate you because you are Jewish...I hate you because you are an Asshole.

And so on Nov 4th if Obama looses and your polls turn out to be BS (which they are) maybe you can blame it on the fact that Obama has NO RECORD, HE's ELITEST (WHERE DO YOU THINK ALL HIS MONEY IS COMING FROM...THE RICH ELITE) Maybe because if people actually took the time to understand what he is proposing...it wont ever work.

The list goes on and on. There are 1000x reasons NOT to vote for Obama...but wait...if a black man speaks well he must be qualified to be the first black president....another reason why this delusional class will always remain at the bottom of the totem pole. At least the mexicans who they are trying to deport actually get up in the morning and go to work, that's more than I can say for the majority of younger black youths. If you would like prison and crime rates please let me know.

Whatever happened to that GOP money machine? McCain was dipping into the RNC pool, who was doing a lot of fundraising on his behalf. What happened?

October 9, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterSebastian

What,

Calm down. During the Wright days, GOP operatives were certain they'd be able to play on the latent racism you rail against.

It works like this. You don't come out and say it race in clear terms, but you use cues and provide straw reasons. It allows those that could never vote for a black person (but just can't admit it publicly or to themselves) a fig leaf to cover their real reason.

Who would these people probably be? For me, it's those that tend to start sentences with "I'm not a racist, but..."

If it were a woman, insert "sexist".

For this election, I'm thinking that there won't be too much if any of "The Bradley Effect". People have pretty much made up their minds whether they're going to vote against him because of race.

Me, I don't blame racism for what happened to me. Did it affect me? Yes. Did it deter me? No. Does it exist? Here's a rhetorical question, do women think men are idiots?
I simply stepped around or on the heads of those that I knew didn't like me because of my race. Did pretty well.

And speaking well doesn't qualify one to be president. We've just lived though 8 years of a white man that clearly couldn't speak or think clearly. I think people understand the importance of having smart people do important things. It doesn't mean they'll always be right, but they've got a better chance at understanding things faster and making better or more insightful decisions.

Ill say it here, too. Less keep this focused on facts, opinions, points of view, etc. All points of view are welcome, as is humor and everything else. Everything but personal attacks. No feed for that stuff.
