McCain's big decision
Monday, October 27, 2008 at 07:24PM John McCain has an important choice to make.
With exactly a week left in the campaign, he continues to trail most polls by a wide margin. Some have it as high as a 13 point deficit, while others show it closer at 6. He's already conceded a bunch of battleground states -- Michigan, Colorado, Iowa, New Mexico and Nevada -- and trails in others, such as Florida, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Missouri.
To say that things look bleak would be an understatement; desperate is probably a more accurate word. A this stage, it would take a miracle for McCain to win -- and by miracle, I mean a tape needs to surface of Reverend Wright, William Ayers and Tony Rezco conspiring in a room somewhere to get Obama elected.
So McCain's choice: he can continue to campaign in battleground states where he has no chance, or he can focus his enegy on key Congressional districts in safe southern states where Republican incumbents are at risk. Bob Dole did something similar in 1996 when he realized he stood no chance of winning, and in the process helped the Republican's keep their majorities in Congress.
There are probably 15 Congressional and 3 senate races where McCain and Palin can make a difference -- they just happen to be in safe Republican states. It would seem like a waste of time for him to campaign in states where he's assuredly going to win, but it could help Republicans hold their numbers in Congress. Let's see what he does.
